About Lake of the Spirits (Nakoda)

Lake Minnewanka has a certain mystique to it, perhaps this is why the Nakoda named it the Lake of the Spirits. The calm surface of this glacier fed lake seems to hide secrets below. A small resort village lies below the surface as the most recent dam project raised the lake over 30 meters submerging the site and making for some cold water scuba diving adventures. The mountains that loom quietly above seem to keep these secrets safe. We have visited this spot during all seasons, the Big Horn Sheep are never far away as they graze the shoreline and surrounding area. This image is inspired by a photo taken after a cross-country ski day on the Cascade trail. The cloudy day cast silver-gray shadows across the frozen lake making for a dramatic winter scene that seemed to forewarn of an impending storm.
