About Takakkaw Falls (Magnificent in Cree)

There is a winding side road that veers off the TransCanada Highway just as you make your way into Yoho National Park. We had often passed by this spot as we made our way to the coast. On a particular fall day when time permitted, we took this exit to head towards Takakkaw Falls. There are a few single-lane switchbacks along the way where one needs to ensure there are no oncoming cars. Once up at the top of the pass, the first glimpse of the falls comes into view. As we made our way closer to the impressive height of this waterfall it came into perspective. As the sun peeked out of the clouds the mist of the spray coming off the main chute began to dance in the light creating rainbows. Takakkaw is Cree for Magnificent; an aptly named natural wonder indeed.
