Drifting
Drifting
Once frozen, the Red Deer River provides endless miles of skiing during the depths of winter. However, as spring approaches the river slowly opens up to reveal itself. Occasionally the water bubbles up and floods the surface creating a perfect sheet of ice. On one particular morning ski, we were drawn to a spot, just south of the cabin, by the sound the river made when the ice splits open. The sun reflected brightly on the surface creating the illusion of a river slowly winding through the snow. This painting was named Drifting by a friend's suggestion, as the scene appears to be inching along like the long thaw of spring.
